In addition to our dog guide program, we offer programs that enhance a person's independence and quality of life in other ways, including orientation and mobility training, Trekker training, and seminars for Orientation and Mobility professionals. Currently, Leader Dog is the only facility in the Western Hemisphere to teach Deaf-blind students to work with a dog guide.

Our Home Transitional
http://www.ourhometransitional.org/
Our Home Transitional provides various types of assistance to homeless single female veterans (i.e. job training and placement, educational training, home placement assistance, and mental and physical healthcare) through other local and national organizations in efforts to help them transition to self-sufficiency in civilian society. These programs will be offered by Our Home Transitional, along with our partnering organizations, such as the VA, VetBiz Central, Land Bank, SV MAP, Workforce Development Veterans Division, LearnKey Veterans Division, VetQuest, Cars4Vets, National Education Alliance, MI Talent bank and many more!
Our Home Transitional will deliver a unique family style environment not offered by any other housing placements in our area. We can also create an opportunity to revitalize and beautify the City of Flint by utilizing homes that are empty, acquire and then rehab them for permanent placement of our clients.
Pets for Vets
http://pets-for-vets.com/
At Pets for Vets, we believe our country owes military veterans a debt of gratitude. Our soldiers have been brave but many of them have returned with physical and emotional injuries that have made it difficult to transition back to civilian life. Some estimates state that as many as 20% of returning military veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Pets for Vets program is dedicated to supporting veterans and providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, training and pairing them with America’s veterans who could benefit from a companion animal. The Pets… 3 to 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year. These animals can make excellent companion animals but never have that chance. Our dedicated animal trainers will evaluate and rescue the shelter animals and provide additional training to ensure that they are able to assimilate into a home, which is quite different from a shelter environment. The Vets… Sadly, there are alarming statistics of suicide, family abuse and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder facing veterans returning to civilian life after military duty. This can cause a downward spiral of apathy, unemployment, broken relationships, addiction and depression. It is our belief that companion animals can be the life saving therapy or friend that many returning service men and women need.

VFW National Home for Children
http://www.vfwnationalhome.org/
The VFW National Home for Children was founded in 1925 as a place where the families left behind by war -- mothers and children, brothers and sisters -- could remain together, keeping the family circle intact even when their serviceman didn't come home.
Today's families face different challenges -- reintegration, post-traumatic stress, high unemployment and rehabilitation from battlefield injuries, among others -- and the National Home has evolved over our decades-long history to meet those changing needs.
Whether we help a family find strength and support close to home through our Helpline, or they become part of our campus community, military and veteran families can count on the VFW National Home for Children to help them build better lives together.
How We Help Helping families. Giving hope. Honoring service. That's how the VFW National Home for Children makes a difference to struggling military and veteran families from across the nation. Helpline 800.313.4200

Living at the National Home "The National Home gave us a second chance, which has turned into a whole new beginning for our family." ~National Home client Families who need a fresh start can live in the safe and peaceful environment of the VFW National Home for Children campus community for 1-4 years and benefit from numerous community supports, including professional case management services, on-site licensed child care, life skills training, tutoring and other educational services, as well as recreational and community service opportunities.
Recognizing that the effects of war can last for generations, the National Home's campus community is open to families of active-duty military personnel, veterans and descendants of members of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary.
Residents must be committed to making changes in their lives, and each family who lives at the National Home is assigned a case manager to help them set and work towards family goals. To remain at the National Home, families are expected to demonstrate consistent progress toward those goals. We work in partnership with the whole family to help them reach their full potential.
