A Helping Hoof

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy is a relatively new form of therapy in which horses are the medium for the therapy. Rather than sitting in a traditional office for therapy, the process takes place in an arena, a field, a round pen, or a barn. The interaction occurs between the individual or group member and one or more horses through groundwork. The horses present their unique view of the world to help the person find their strengths or develop areas which will benefit from growth. The horses are survival based, so they offer a perked awareness that can sense things beyond the human's basic knowledge.
For many people, working outside of a traditional office setting is more comfortable and less threatening. If someone has issues with trust or claustrophobia, as many victims of trauma do, being outside allows more room to move and has less of a sense of being confined.
Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy works well with older children, adolescents, families, an individual adults. A Helping Hoof specializes in working with veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and other anxiety disorders.
