Brigadoon Services Dogs
http://www.brigadoondogs.org/
We train dogs to provide assistance to Veterans, children and adults with physical, developmental disabilities, anxiety, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.
Brigadoon is honored to introduce a program for veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The veterans who are diagnosed with these conditions have a difficult time handling the stress and the memories of the event which impacted their ability to perform day to day functions, interact normally with family and friends, and maintain gainful employment.
When teamed with a well-mannered service dog the veteran is able to receive a vitally important reality affirmation when the dog is summoned. Tactile stimulation can be very calming under stressful situations.
Veteran's Program (Canines and Heroes for Independence)
The dog can be trained to nudge his partner to “snap” the veteran out of a frozen moment caused by anxiety or wake him up while having nightmares, or night terrors by turning on a light. The veteran can give a cue for the dog to stand between himself and other people to feel more comfortable in public places.

The American Lake Veterans Golf Course is made possible by a small army of volunteers who believe in the power of golf to heal, to create new possibilities, and to provide the fellowship and camaraderie of warriors.
Heartbeat Serving Wounded Warriors
http://www.heartbeatforwarriors.org/
Why Heartbeat exists for wounded service members and families
Heartbeat exists to serve the many wounded service members in Washington state. They include those who were wounded in combat, injured in training overseas, and injured in training at home. We also help their families. When a man or woman serves in the military, the whole family serves — including spouse and children. Everyone sacrifices financially, emotionally, and physically.
We’re in awe of the military families’ sacrifices for us, complete strangers. They’re our heroes. Our donors agree, and thanks to them Heartbeat can help change our heroes’ lives, which affect all of us.
Heartbeat—Serving Wounded Warriors’ programs and services address the many challenges wounded service members and their families experience every day:
Therapeutic services for wounded warriors Heartbeat’s therapeutic services for wounded warriors and their families provide innovative, evidence-based treatments. Licensed providers and certified professionals work with warriors to heal physical, mental, and emotional injuries. Heartbeat pays for all services.
Emergency Assistance Program for warriors and families The Emergency Assistance Program we offer gives financial help for life’s daily and unexpected needs.
A wounded service member separated from family for medical reasons still has living expenses. Separation can last months — two households must survive on one salary, especially if the family lives in another state.
Delayed military pay, which happens at times, and reduced pay, can mean no electricity for the home. Sometimes it means no food for the baby. We also offer assistance with airfare to bring a family member to the wounded warrior. A service member might also need to travel for a family funeral.
Heartbeat helps immediately — no repayment occurs.

Morale-building programs for warriors and families Our morale-building programs are critical to the well-being of our wounded warriors and their families. When morale is up, health improves. These programs show service members how much we appreciate their huge sacrifices. Building morale brings them a little bit of joy amid extreme challenges.

Global War on Terrorism facts Our programs are constantly growing because the need is increasing. We focus on those fighting the GWOT — Global War on Terrorism. As suicide bombers, with improvised explosive devices, and other terrorist threats increase in both Afghanistan and Iraq, so do our military operations. We see more and more wounded warriors every day. This will continue.
The Pentagon recently approved $300 million for research on PTSD and TBI. Communities feel the effects of these health issues: employment problems, health costs, domestic violence, and alcohol and drug abuse.

Trauma is not exclusive to those who have been in military combat zones. It can be found in survivors of abusive relationships and other violent crimes. It can change the lives of the young, the elderly and every age in between. For over twenty years, Dr. Bridget Cantrell has treated trauma survivors including those with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). As a result of her experience during those years, she has developed a reputation as a leading expert in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Dr. Cantrell has authored several books to assist trauma survivors and their friends and families to better understand how the mind processes traumatic events and behaves afterwards. Its from this knowledge and awareness that a path toward a better quality of life is achieved, a path for Hearts Toward Home. These books are available for purchase by anyone on Amazon.com.
Dr. Cantrell is often a featured PTSD expert during events and programs designed to provide a healthy and neutral environment for camaraderie and guidance (e.q. horse camps and wilderness excursions). Recently these have included episodes of the show, “Warrior Camp,”

Operation Write Home
http://operationwritehome.org/
This merry band of thousands of card makers is made up of Americans – and citizens of other nations too – who care about our military, and want to support them through creativity and encouragement. Many thousands of crafters of all ages and levels of experience have participated since 2007!
Care packages filled with hundreds of handmade cards are sent to our contacts, restocking every 6-8 weeks, and are sent in time for the long journey back home to loved ones. Each box is packed with great care, alternating styles, colors, and cardmakers from all over the USA, creating “eye candy” for heroes who see only khaki around them. The topper on each box is a plastic bag filled with 20-30 letters from adults and children across the country, letters handed out especially to those in need of a positive word from the home front.
Boxes are shipped through every week of the year, so join us anytime in sending your beautiful creations to help our heroes keep in touch with home!
Pets for Vets
http://pets-for-vets.com/
At Pets for Vets, we believe our country owes military veterans a debt of gratitude. Our soldiers have been brave but many of them have returned with physical and emotional injuries that have made it difficult to transition back to civilian life. Some estimates state that as many as 20% of returning military veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Pets for Vets program is dedicated to supporting veterans and providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, training and pairing them with America’s veterans who could benefit from a companion animal. The Pets… 3 to 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year. These animals can make excellent companion animals but never have that chance. Our dedicated animal trainers will evaluate and rescue the shelter animals and provide additional training to ensure that they are able to assimilate into a home, which is quite different from a shelter environment. The Vets… Sadly, there are alarming statistics of suicide, family abuse and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder facing veterans returning to civilian life after military duty. This can cause a downward spiral of apathy, unemployment, broken relationships, addiction and depression. It is our belief that companion animals can be the life saving therapy or friend that many returning service men and women need.
Shepherds for Lost Sheep, Inc.
http://www.shepherdsforlostsheepinc.org/
While we focus primarily on the Psychiatric Service Dogs, we rarely find a veteran without a physical need as well. Therefore, we train our dogs to the individual veterans needs whether it is PTSD mitigation, traumatic brain injury (TBI) mitigation, or a mobility problem.
Our goal is to provide all services free of charge to those Veterans with Post Traumatic Syndrome, TBI, or mobility problems, who will benefit from a service K-9 partner.
Trainer Assisted Service Dog Program
We acknowledge that there are veterans in need of our help, who have their own dog that needs training. With the lack of resources for those veterans, we have created a division of our main program specifically for those veterans.
They work under the guidance of our Certified Dog Obedience Trainer/Instructor staff to teach their dogs the required skillset to finalize the completion of their service dog program.
These veteran/K-9 teams are expected to check in with their supervising trainer weekly, complete training and knowledge based "teamwork", progress at an acceptable rate and at the end successfully pass the same tests used for our program dogs.
Some veterans can train their own dogs, others are not in a place of their journey to do that. Shepherds for Lost Sheep, Inc. did not want to exile a whole section of veterans who need service dogs, but are willing and able to complete the training with a dog they are already bonded to.
If you have an existing dog, who meets the temperment requirements to be a service dog, and you have a prescription from your medical care team to have a service dog, then this program may be for you.
Springwire
http://www.cvm.org/
Springwire connects people in crisis with the social services and support networks that surround them – expanding a community’s capacity to care. By providing free access to tailored communication tools, Springwire restores a sense of hope and dignity, enabling people in transition to stabilize their lives and get access to the help they need to move out of crisis.
Springwire weaves together the support community, so agencies are better able to coordinate housing, medical care and employment services for their participants – enhancing the efficiency of the whole system. By empowering participants to communicate with the right resources, no matter their personal situation, Springwire reduces the isolation of homelessness, allowing people to re-integrate into the community faster.
Springwire began as Community Voice Mail in Seattle in 1991. Driven by the challenge of connecting homeless, phoneless workers with job opportunities, the organization’s founders came up with a simple idea: Give people a phone number that stays constant, even if they can’t. The success of the program spread, along with the idea of using technology to alleviate poverty.

The Virtual Hope Box
http://www.t2.health.mil/apps/virtual-hope-box
The Virtual Hope Box (VHB) is a smartphone application designed for use by patients and their behavioral health providers as an accessory to treatment. The VHB contains simple tools to help patients with coping, relaxation, distraction, and positive thinking.
Patients and providers can work together to personalize the VHB content on the patient's own smartphone according to the patient's specific needs. The patient can then use the VHB away from clinic, continuing to add or change content as needed.
The VHB provides help with emotional regulation and coping with stress via personalized supportive audio, video, pictures, games, mindfulness exercises, positive messages and activity planning, inspirational quotes, coping statements, and other tools.
The VHB was developed by the National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2), a US Department of Defense Center of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Wounded Vets Fishing
http://woundedvetsfishing.org/
Our goal is to provide an alternate means of therapy for our wounded returning from combat with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Physical Disabilities. Give them a stress free, non medical environment to interact with others returning from combat and those with previous combat experiences to increase their moral. Finally to provide them with a tool to reutilize in the future should relapse occur.
The wounded Veterans Fishing Program was created in the beginning of 2009 by VFW Post 318 of Olympia, Washington. Originally the concept was done by Danny Gabriel with a few of his fishing friends who felt the need to help American wounded.
Fishing is the most relaxing sport and is a very good way to build a person's confidence and morale.
